Acausal

Esther Hz

November 5th – November 28th

Acausal is an invitation to indulge in the phenomenon of coincidence. Coincidence may be described as the chance encounter of two unrelated causal chains which-miraculously, it seems, merge into a significant event. It provides the neatest paradigm of the bisociation of previously separate contexts, engineered by fate, according to Arthur Koestler. Acausal is an art installation featuring a compilation of coincidence and synchronicity anecdotes. Stories the artist has gathered from her life, friends, family and associates can be listened to in the midst of a faux abandoned, derelict living room environment, showcasing artifacts from the stories themselves. Upon visiting the exhibit, guests will have the opportunity to share and record their own stories for use in future projects.

“Coincidence is a pimp and a cardsharper in ordinary fiction but a marvelous artist in the patterns of facts recollected by a non-ordinary memorist.” -Vladimir Nabokov

“I’ve always been taken by vintage objects, fascinated with the history they contained and wondered what they would say if they could talk. In a way, this exhibit is my version of that fantasy blended with my love for coincidence and synchronicity. As you walk through the space, you can access audio stories linked with various objects in the installation, each story a true account of someone’s experience with synchronicity or coincidence.” -Esther Hz

She is a past resident artist at Redline and PlatteForum. Her work was featured by The Denver Art Museum at Untitled in 2019 and Arthyve’s Archives as Muse program debut, she was also awarded a RedBull Microgrant in 2020. She has worked with teens at the MCA through the “Failure Lab” program, mentored girls at Resilience Rising and worked as Associate Director at PlatteForum where she managed an international artist residency, youth program and podcast. She offers creative programming to the residents of Denver where she sustains her studio practice.

As a multidisciplinary artist, Esther Hz experiments with sculpture, video, installation and performance. Her orchestrated happenings have a surreal and sometimes situationist type of absurdity where she is able to examine participants within experiences she has designed. She aims to re-frame and distill the human condition in wildly inventive ways that put us, the viewers, in completely new situations to see ourselves and be seen. Most often, these events are centered around participation and engagement where she modernizes old worn out rituals or scenarios and offers new bizarre ones to fill a much needed emotional or social gap.
