Chris Doyle
http://chrisdoylestudio.com/Clepsydra is a hybrid plant machine that transforms a clocktower into an alternative timekeeping device. Based on timepieces used by ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, Clepsydra uses the flow of water to keep time.
Clepsydra is part of the May 2025 program MO CAP, curated by Geraldine Erman.
About the Artist:
Doyle uses his multifaceted practice to investigate the practical and poetic consequences of labor. His projects, frequently showcased in public spaces, focus on how society's obsession with progress affects our delicate connections to the natural world and to each other. Central to his work is the idea that our relationship to the landscape cannot be fully grasped without first understanding the roots of our industrious impulses.
He has exhibited widely at venues in the U.S. and internationally. His temporary and permanent urban projects include commissions for the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia, the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Stockholm, Sweden, as well as for Melbourne, Australia, and Edmonton, Canada. His most recent commission was made for Building 5 at MassMoCA in 2024. He is the recipient of a 2014 John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and the 2014 Borusan Contemporary Art Collection Prize. His work has also been supported by grants from the Creative Capital Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, NYSCA, and the MAP Fund.
